Samurai Warriors 5 has found a good middle ground. However, with dozens upon dozens of playable officers, we started to see many of them sharing the same weapons. It was once the norm for every character to have their own unique weapon and moveset. One major gripe fans have had with past Warriors games is cloning.

Instead of immediately hopping from one scenario to the next, you’ll want to visit the Castle, upgrade weapons, buy items, and train your officers. There’s a constant flurry of points and collectables as you hack your way across the battlefield, giving purpose to the somewhat mindless button bashing. Over the years they’ve brought a number of ideas to the table, some much better than others, but Samurai Warriors 5 is the best yet. Omega Force has also been experimenting with how character progression works.

I can’t remember the last time I have actually cared about levelling up the entire roster of characters in a Warriors game. This latest sequel has also done something a Warriors game hasn’t managed for quite some time: offer a rewarding sense of challenge and variety amid the inherited hack ‘n’ slash action. We’d be surprised if the inevitable Dynasty Warriors 10 doesn’t make this same choice. While this means that some fan favourites won’t appear in Samurai Warriors 5, the game has a much stronger focus on story than previous entries. When warlords go head to head, there’s a lot more gravity to these campaigns instead of them being wrapped up neatly in a single mission. Samurai Warriors 5 goes at a much slower pace, taking time to develop these characters both on and off the battlefield.
